Writer
Calling himself “a writer”
Gil’s job title changed in 1993. While attending the California Writers Conference at Asilomar (which he later directed for five years, Gil met a friendly group of writers who asked him, “What do you write?” Confessing that he was a consultant, but had written over twenty books, the group immediately told him, “Gil, you’re a writer.” He has proudly used that job title ever since.

Writing to deadline
In conjunction with the opening of a movie theater in Sebastopol Gil was asked to write a movie column for the local newspaper. Gil says: “It worked out great. I learned to write under a strict deadline, my editor let me write about anything that struck my fancy (provided it was about movies), and I got weekly feedback from my friends and neighbors.”

Learning to do research
In 1999, Gil became a freelance writer for World Trade Press, a publishing company specializing in business books for travelers. Since his job was to write about the business customs of countries he had never visited, Gil had to rely on the expertise of other world travelers. But how to reach them? How could he uncover the arcane import documentation requirements for Korea or South Africa or Saudi Arabia. In the last years of the last century, portals to the World Wide Web were not as user-friendly as they are today. Search engines required the use of Boolean logic and most information sources had limited access. This meant using his Alumni membership to use the library website access at Stanford and other universities. Soon, Boolean logic became Gil’s mantra as he discovered how to uncover needed information through those “back doors.”

A one-third payment of the estimated cost initiates the agreement.
